Making a Difference: How STEAM Education Shapes Young Hearts

Last week, our campers from our "STEAM Flight & Lemonade Stand" camp rolled up their sleeves and put their entrepreneurial skills to the test. They hosted a Lemonade Stand on our James Island campus, welcoming families with refreshing cups of lemonade and bright smiles.

But this was no ordinary stand. Behind every sale, our young entrepreneurs were practicing real-world skills:

• Creativity in designing their stand and attracting customers

• Teamwork as they divided tasks and supported one another

• Customer service while greeting and thanking each visitor

• Business sense as they handled money and tracked their earnings

Watching these children take ownership of their project was a joy. They learned that hard work pays off—and that running a business takes both heart and hustle.

Turning Profit Into Purpose: Giving Back to the Community

The most beautiful moment came after the lemonade was sold. As a group, our campers gathered to decide what to do with the money they had raised. The decision was unanimous: they wanted to give it away.

Our campers chose to support Pet Helpers on James Island, a local charity caring for dogs and cats in need. With their earnings, they purchased food and supplies for the animals. Then, the campers personally delivered their donations—climbing aboard a small school bus to bring their gifts straight to the shelter.

Seeing the children's faces light up as they handed over their donations was unforgettable. In that moment, they understood something powerful: their creativity and effort could make a real difference in their community.

Why Service-Based Learning Leaves a Lasting Impact

When learning connects to service, lessons stick. Children remember how it felt to help others far longer than they remember a worksheet. Projects like our lemonade stand teach empathy, responsibility, and the joy of giving—values that shape kind, capable adults.
